If you like looking at weeds and trees this is the ride for you. Steam train is slow (I can walk as fast) and breathing for passengers is tough due to smoke and soot. Leaving the station, the view is trashy with junk railroad cars and equipment etc. all over. The museum is super cool and informative, one of the best I've ever seen. The employees are polite and very knowledgeable about the railroad and equipment. I think this would be a great ride in the fall when the leaves change, I would go back for that. The dinner and desert rides are with diesel locomotives, so expect a better ride.
It's a excellent experience and the scene is beautiful. I recommend the open air car because you to see the scenery from all directions. The museum has a great collection of the railroad equipment. I loved it. I absolutely love to visit the Boone and scenic valley railroad again.
I didn't go personally my mother did and she said they were stopped a lot and by the time they got hot chocolate she just wanted it to be over. Their carts aren't heated and it looks like it's pretty expensive for something not worth it. She did how ever say it would of been better during the day. I give it 3 because I'm nutrial about it. I probably won't try it personally but every person besides my mother said it was cool.
Good museum that shows a history of railroads in the area. The railroad tour is a great tour of the Des Moines River valley. The train cars can be a bit cold in the winter, so make sure to dress warmly. The tour guides have great stories and sense of humor.
I did the Christmas themed train ride with my wife and 3 year old daughter. We got the First Class seats, coach doesn't have heat. The ride is the perfect length for a three year old, about 15 minutes one way, stopped to see Santa, 15 minutes back. The ride involved a story and Christmas songs. Daughter loved it.
