Do not fund this horrible place, they should be fined for animal abuse.
DO NOT shop here. They absolutely do not treat their animals well. I went in a few days ago to find that inside it must have been at least 90 degrees, and the only fan in the place was pointed at the register.
I only go to the Ark! It is the best pet store that I have found! The employees are always kind and very helpful. I have gotten many animals from there, they are always healthy and happy, and the employees have always been kind enough to make sure I get the best possible one! The owner is always in a good mood and will assist with any questions and or concerns. I feel as if I can always go in there and ask them questions about my hamsters. I also bring them in and have them check them out for me. This place is always clean and I have never seen an animal mistreated. The Ark is DEFINITELY the pet store I would recommend when looking for a pet. Love this place! :)
I had just moved to Ames and was having trouble finding a pet store. I was so happy when a customer at work told me The Ark existed, and despite my coworkers warnings I decided to go. Upon stepping in the door, I was appalled. The first thing I saw was a five year old or so girl picking up new born hamsters and playing with them like they were dolls. Was no one watching the animals? The birds were way overstocked and since they were mid molt the place was dirty and had wet sopping feathers stuck to the floor and walls. The entire time I was there not a single employee came and talked to me, and I couldn't even figure out who worked there and who was a customer because everyone was playing with animals and no one was at the register. The reptiles were probably in the best shape out of all the animals, but many of their tanks were being held together with duck tape and no latch. When I got to the fish I was shocked. The tanks were dirty and full of dead fish. Water was pouring out of some onto the floor, which I almost slipped on. Many of the tanks were empty and dirty, making the whole place an eyesore. The rats broke my heart, as they were showed in little cages smaller than a lunchbox. The store layout is not customer friendly and they don't even try keeping the place looking nice for customers. I wished I worked here just so I could fix the place up. It's terrible and the animals are so overcrowded and poorly taken care of. I went in to buy rat food, but I'd rather drive an hour to another store than fund this terrible place. No thank you.
Their ferrets were near death. They seemed to have lots of health issues based on their appearance and did not move at all when touched. Ferrets should be in temperatures of 80 or under.
The rabbits were very slow and nonchalant, not reacting at all to the attention given.
This place is amazing. Very hard working and dedicating employees who put their lives into running an honest business and providing the best care to animals.
The owners are kind and helpful but I do not think they know how to properly take care of many of the animals they sell. The rabbits in particular are NOT kept properly. The store sells commercial "rabbit" cages that are WAY to small. Rabbits need a lot of space, especially if they are caged up most of the time. This is obvious to anyone who does their research but unfortunately most people who buy rabbits from this place do not. I would really like to contact them on this matter, but I somehow doubt it would make a difference. I have considered reporting this store for neglecting not only the rabbits and but also the rodents and birds which are not kept in good condition either.
